Description:

Both teams seemed a little out of sync in this game which started 50 minutes late amidst distant thunder and lighting.  Because of the wet playing conditions and late start, the game was dominated by pitching and defense.  Andrew Willinger, the Cardinals starter, picked up the win by pitching 3 no-hit, shutout innings.  He was followed to the mound by Nathan Frantz who picked up the save by pitching two solid innings, striking out 3 Diamondbacks.  With the exception of one bad inning, the Diamondbacks got good pitching from Drew Ray and Zack Lambert.

The only real offense of the night was produced in the Cardinals second inning when they were able to put together a 5 run rally.  Trey Shapanus led the inning off with a walk, followed by a solid single by Keith Menzer (who later also hit a long double), followed by a walk to Kyle McIntosh loading the bases.  Christian Haynes then delivered.  After a couple of hard fouls down the first base line, Haynes roped a single into right field scoring Shapanus and Menzer.  Then Steven Jones, Greg Manfredi, and Frantz all walked, the later 2 walks forcing in runs.  After a force at home Evan Pearce drove in the 5th run of the inning with a single to left.  The Cardinals would have likely scored more runs in other innings had it not been for a solid Diamondback defense, led by Bryce English’s excellent play at 3rd.

The Diamondbacks produced a run in the 4th inning with three straight hits by Chase Kostellic, Aaron “Peanut” Eddins, and Bryce English.  They also scored in the 5th as Justin VanHeusen and Brandon Hoffman parlayed walks, good base running, and a great hit by Philip Yost into 2 runs.  As with the Cardinals the Diamondbacks would have scored more had it not been for a very solid Cardinals defense.  The Cardinals defense was highlighted by great plays from both their pitchers who fielded their position outstandingly.
