Description:

This game turned out to be the first extra inning game for both the Red Sox and the Cardinals.  There was some fine pitching in the game, highlighted by the gutsy 6 inning performance of Matt Rowe, who stuck out 12 Cardinals and walked only 3. He was followed to the mound by Ben Peterson who struck out all 3 Cardinals he faced, ending the game.  The Cardinals also had solid pitching.  Nathan Frantz, the Cardinals starter, was let down by his defense in the first inning, but recovered to retire the Red Sox in order in the second and third innings.  Evan Pearce followed Frantz to the mound, striking out 7 in his 3 innings of work.  Andrew Willinger closed it out for the Cardinals with 2 strike outs in the seventh inning.

Rowe was also a big part of the Red Sox offense, with 2 hits.  Brandon Funk, whose aggressive base running scored the winning run, had a hit, as did James Fox and Peterson. The Cardinals offense was led by Pearce and Willinger with 3 hits each, scoring 5 of the Cardinals runs.

Both these good teams showed some amazing defense, especially from their first basemen.  Jake Karlin, of the Red Sox, and Michael Reeves, of the Cardinals, both robbed a batter of an extra base hit.
