Description:

The Cardinals bats were on fire tonight as they generated a season high 15 hit attack.  Trey Shapanus and Michael Reaves led the Cardinals with 3 hits apiece.  Shapanus who has, of late, been swinging one of the hottest bats for the Cardinals had an awesome triple down the right field line to drive in two runs.  Evan Pearce (2 Doubles), Michael Taylor (Double), and Andrew Willinger (Triple) also added extra base hits to the potent Cardinal attack.

The Mariner offense came alive in the later innings, led by the hitting of Zack Verdea and A. Field.  Jacob Raymond contributed with his base running to score two of the Mariner runs.

In addition to the offense, both teams played solid defense.  The defensive play of the game was turned in by Travis Held, the Mariners’ starting pitcher, who made a diving catch of a short pop up along the third base line, then turned and threw to third to double off a Cardinal runner.  The Cardinals also had a defensive gem turned in by Christian Haynes, who picked off a hard line drive in right field.

Pearce, the Cardinals’ starter, picked up his second win of the season.  Pearce, battling what seemed to be a very small strike zone tonight, was able to shut out the Mariners over 3 innings, striking out 7 while not allowing a hit.  Haynes and Kyle McIntosh both made their first appearances on the mound for the Cardinals.  They along with Nathan Frantz each pitched an inning; effectively closing out the game by striking out seven (Haynes 2 Ks, Frantz 2Ks, & McIntosh 3Ks) while allowing only 2 hits.
